On Friday, the 11th of May 2012, the first localisation workshop took place at the University of Roehampton, bringing together television and video games localisation executives with the aim to identify common ground, discuss production for the international market via the localisation route, and to establish knowledge and skills gaps in the adaptation business.

Workshop participants from the video games industry included Marta Lois Gonzalez (Localisation Manager, SEGA Europe), Sonia Souto (Senior Localisation Manager) and Flavia Timiani (Head of Localisation) from Disney Interactive, and Vanessa Wood (Head of Localisation, Sony Computer Entertainment). Representatives from the TV Format industry included Joerg Bachmaier (EVP EMEA, BBC Worldwide), Mike Beale (Director International Formats, ITV Studios) and Vasha Wallace (SVP Format Acquisition, FremantleMedia). Perspectives from channel localisation were provided by Kaspar Pflueger (Program Director, RTL Hrvatska) and from documentary re-versioning by Max McGonigal (MD, CrowTV).  Alessandro Traverso (SVP Commercial Development, HIT Entertainment) and Prof. Jeanette Steemers (Professor for Media & Communications, University of Westminster) provided expertise in children’s media and merchandising, another media business strand that is extremely international but in a localised form.

The workshop was led by the Media Across Borders network organisers, Miguel Bernal-Merino (Lecturer in Game & Media Localisation), Andrea Essser (Lecturer in Media and Communications), Iain Smith (Lecturer in Film) and network coordinator Irene Artegiani (MA Audiovisual Translation), all from the University of Roehampton.
